The bottom of the cup holder is designed to hold either large containers or smaller containers securely and safely. The main inside diameter is 3 1/2". That diameter extends down 2 1/2" to within 3/4" of the bottom of the cup holder. At that depth, the diameter of the cup holder decreases to 2 1/2" in order to securely hold smaller containers.
